When we are in the flow of summer flowers it is difficult to get into the planning stage for the next year but it is a process I go through constantly during the season. I spend a lot of time noting what has been a triumph and what needs more consideration. Over the years and by working with flowers creatively you begin to realise it is actually more important to plant a range of varieties rather than being seduced into planting a lot of one variety, unless you are wholesaleing obviously where quantities are a must. Since switching to only growing for our own weddings and workshops I have become more conscious of, what I grow, and why I grow it. This
is especially important if you are a home grower or are limited in growing space.
As we continue into late summer the big blooming favourites are coming into their own, the Dahlias, Zinnias, sunflowers and later the Chrysanths are the focal flowers of the season. It is easy to be swept up by the showstoppers of any season when planning a cut flower patch. But there are so many component parts that contribute to creating an interesting floral arrangement. So instead of focusing solely on the focal flowers I thought in this month’s article I would create a summer bouquet highlighting all of the unsung stems and the diversity required to create a bouquet with interest.
