This month I’ve been spending time building benches and preparing for a massive Spring of seed sowing. They say moving house can be one of the most stressful things you can do. Well, moving your polly tunnels has proved quite a challenge too!. It is nearly all done, I still don’t have the benefit of power and heat benches like some growers, but this is something I am working with rather than wishing I had. I’ve developed a new warmth-storing system for early sowings, by building tunnels within my tunnel, there is more on that in the behind-the-scenes video.
I've completed the first round of my seed sowing schedule which was listed in last month’s article, and thankfully everything is germinating well in the new compost after the devastation caused by a compost supplier last year. So fingers crossed that my plan to double production of our cut flower plugplants might be a wise decision after all, and not a sign I’ve lost the plot, which I’m sure has crossed people’s minds including my own at times.
On the cusp of Spring, it is easy to get carried away with the tiny seeds, and all the excitement of potential new plants but it is also important not to forget the old faithful Shrubs in the ground. Now is the time to give them thier annual prune to keep them happy and healthy. It may seem counterproductive to give your roses and Hydranges a chop when they are getting big and bushy but be brave and they will repay you with blooms in summer and Autumn.
